Couples counselling is the process of counselling the parties of a relationship together in an effort to help them recognize and better manage or reconcile troublesome differences and repeating patterns of distress. Relationship issues can cause significant emotional problems for one or both partners as the relationship that once grounded them and made them feel secure now leaves them drained, worried and insecure. In these circumstances one or both partners can retreat into themselves and stop communicating honestly or effectively as problems build. Deciding to seek couples counselling is an important step in recognizing that things have become difficult and in itself, represents some level of commitment from both parties to acknowledge what is happening, explore the problems and differences and work to bring about change.
Talking about issues with a trained therapist present can be extremely useful in helping the couple understand their problems in ways that are solvable. I work to encourage both parties to first notice and then overcome destructive patterns of relating that keep them stuck in conflict and crisis, resulting in one or both parties feeling unheard, unsupported and unloved, which then creates the impression that problems are unsolvable as positions become further entrenched.
Providing tools and techniques that help the couple build upon the gains they make in the sessions and start to embed new patterns of behaviour in their daily interactions is also an important part of the work. There are so many issues and factors that can get in the way of loving relationships in our busy and often complex lives. Confronting these difficulties and working to reconnect with our significant other can be an empowering and affirming experience. Relationships, like life, never stay the same and engaging in couples counselling can provide a safe and supportive environment for both partners to come together, overcome difficulties and build confidence in their ability to change and grow.
